I LOVE Being a Homeschool Mom!!!

Spring is buzzing, and so are the bugs & the birds. We went out to catch lightning bugs & were amazed to see them mating!!! Yes, we KNOW they mate, but it’s one of those things you think you’ll never see except as a National Geographic special.

Here’s how it went down. We had discussed recently WHY fireflies light up. We found that the males fly around & flash their little bottoms, while the female “lies in wait” upon a tree, the ground, or some other still object. She flashes him back. This goes on until he can find her to mate.

Sooooo, Tris decided he wanted to find a female to put in his jar. He comes running across the yard yelling “Look what I found, Mom!!!” And this is what he found. A female alright, but she was already spoken for 🙂 I told him we needed to leave them be. Apparently they’re oblivious to the rest of the world when they are making babies. So, we sat them in this tree, so we wouldn’t trample them.

And we went off to catch some more. But Tris was still on a hunt for a female, and he found this:

Apparently they’re all feely before they get their groove on. The male crawls all over her before getting into position.

^ Again, oblivious to being moved around on a leaf.

So anyway, here are a few more pics of the lightning bugs (but keep readin after for more nifty stuff!):

We also learned (through observation) that the males abdomens (light up sections) are larger than their female counterparts. In reading about them, oxygen is what activates the light up gases in the lightning bugs. This happens each time they breathe in.

Now, a few years ago, Keenan & I made a birdhouse out of scrap wood. It’s been sitting on our porch for a few months now, and we noticed a bird was frequenting it. Isn’t she beautiful? After some research I believe she is a brown songbird, and sing she does. It’s beautiful!!!

A couple days ago, I decided to take a peek. Inside I saw a teeny mass of fluff. I knew there was a bird in there. A little bit later I stuck the camera in front of it & captured this:

A few hours later, I peeked again since I could hear them chirping. THERE WERE 4!!!

The kids love them. So do I. I love teaching my children!
