Vanilla Extract- Make Your Own

Posted on | September 4, 2012 | 5 Comments

My friend Sheree is obsessed with loves Christmas. Each year around January March July she starts counting down. On any day I can ask her how many days until Christmas, and she knows. Because she’s obsessed.

Anyhoo, as of today there are 112 days left. That’s just enough time for you to order vanilla beans, buy a bottle of vodka & get your ‘nilla extract going! I like to let mine steep for 3 months. You can let it steep longer. I leave my vanilla beans in the vodka as I use the extract up, so going longer won’t hurt a thing!

I also realized that I was getting low on homemade magic baking potion, so I hopskipdoodled to the liquor store to buy a ginormous bottle of booze. I left the kids at home. This time. I went with a 5 Times Distilled product. Since going gluten free, I’ve done lots of reading. I’ve read that 3X distilled is excellent for the gluten free crowd, so I went with 5X distilled. Overkill. I know. But in my defense, it was a buck cheaper than the leading brand.

Here’s the down low on making your own vanilla extract at home. See after the printable pictorial for an image-free printable version 🙂

Ink-saving printable version:

I love homemade vanilla extract!!!

Stay tuned to see what I do with the rest of the vodka. No. I didn’t drink it. At least not all of it. Don’t judge.

    Sorry for posting again.

Also would 1/4 lb have at least 15 – 20 beans?

1/4 pound should have a lot more than 20 beans, so you should be good to go 🙂 I bought mine on ebay from a seller named vanillaproducts (or something like that)
